The Citizen Lab (founded 2001) is an interdisciplinary research and development lab located at the Munk Centre for International Studies at the University of Toronto. Founded (and currently directed by) Professor Ron Deibert, the Citizen Lab does research at the intersection of technology, civic networks, and human rights. Probably the most well known activity of the Citizen Lab is its research on Internet censorship through the OpenNet Initiative — a collaborative project among the Citizen Lab, the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard Law School, the Oxford Internet Institute, and the Advanced Network Research Group at Cambridge University, as well as partner non-governmental organizations worldwide.

The Citizen Lab is also responsible for the research and development of the psiphon censorship circumvention tool, released on December 1st, 2006.

The Citizen Lab has produced documentary television programs, sponsors student internships, and engages in Internet-related research projects in other areas, such as information war. It is considered by many to be a University-based centre of Hacktivism, insofar as the latter term is defined as using and experimenting with technology in support of human rights.
