Just a Friend

Just a Friend” is a 1989 comedic and romantic hip hop song by rapper Biz Markie, in which he alternates between rap and deliberately off-key singing. In the video for this song, he wore a powdered wig and 18th-century clothing, perhaps to parody the film Amadeus.

The song samples are from the original 1968 song “You Got What I Need” (1968) by singer/songwriter Freddie Scott. It was later named the 81st best one-hit wonder of all time by VH1.

Biz Markie popularized the phrase “Oh, snap!” with this song.

It was later covered (somewhat more seriously) by Mario and Kidz Bop, by progressive-jam band Umphrey’s McGee, and by Tally Hall who play “Just a Friend” at nearly all of their concerts.

50 Cent’s song “Best Friend” contains re-sung samples from “Just a Friend”.
